Mosquito Collection, Identification, and Disease Surveillance

Last year on 7/06/2005 the City of Sonora sent in live collected mosquitoes for identification and disease surveillance. There were not any viruses reported. Below, is some information on the mosquitoes collected in the City of Sonora and their habits.

Aedes Albopictus- Asian Tiger  Mosquito. This mosquito is from the artificial container group of mosquitoes. This mosquito will  fly about ½ mile. It is a daytime feeder, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. It likes shady areas during the hot daytime. The female must have a blood meal to lay eggs, in doing so she really likes to lay her eggs in tires. The tires can be dry when she lays her eggs. The mosquito eggs will then survive inside a dry tire all winter, for at least a year, waiting on water to hatch out. This mosquito came to the United States from Asia.

Aedes Triseriatus –This mosquito also is from the artificial container or tree hole group of mosquitoes. It’s flight is about 0.5 miles. It also is a daytime feeder. It lays it’s eggs in artificial containers or tree holes and the eggs will also survive the winter in a dry tire, artificial container or tree hole. In the spring, when warm weather and water come, the eggs are already there ready to hatch into larva, pupa and then mosquito.

The City of Sonora mosquito control will be collecting more mosquitoes for identification and disease surveillance this year.
